๐ท๐ด Romaniaโs head coach Mircea Lucescu is chasing a World Cup at 80, while battling his own body.
Lucescu has been in and out of hospital in recent months but has continued preparing for their World Cup play-off, even analyzing opponents from his hospital bed.
Doctors cleared him to continue, and he chose to stay, calling it his โduty to Romanian football.โ
โI canโt leave like a coward.โ
Long before this chapter, Lucescu captained Romania at the 1970 World Cup. A decade later, at just 36, he was already managing the national team in his first stint, guiding them to Euro 1984 qualification and coming close to making it to another World Cup two years later.
In 1983, he handed a debut to an 18-year-old Gheorghe Hagi, a decision that would shape Romanian football for a generation.
More than 30 trophies later, this might be his hardest fight yet, to take Romania back to the World Cup after 28 years.
