Context/Details:
April 2017.
In a harrowing incident in Kuwait, an Ethiopian maid suffered a perilous fall from the seventh floor of a building while trying to escape what she claimed was an attempt on her life by her employer.
The distressing scene was captured on video by the employer who filmed the domestic worker as she dangled precariously from a window ledge, pleading for help. The terrified maid is seen screaming 'hold me, hold me'. Shockingly, the employer did not assist, instead remarking, "Oh, crazy, come back," as the maid lost her grip and plummeted downwards.
Miraculously, the maid survived the fall, sustaining a broken arm and injuries to her nose and ears, after striking a metal awning during her descent.
In a subsequent interview from her hospital bed, the maid refuted local media claims that she had attempted suicide. She recounted a harrowing tale of being locked in a bathroom by her employer, who she alleged was planning to kill her and dispose of her body. In a desperate bid for survival, she chose to risk the fall.
The Kuwaiti police detained the employer for filming the incident without attempting to rescue her employee. She was charged in March 2017 with 'filming an individual without consent and publishing a video of an individual without consent.' The employer later claimed she had tried to help the maid. She also defended her decision to record the incident, claiming it was to avoid accusations of murder if the maid had died. However, this act and the subsequent posting of the footage on social media sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. The Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights demanded an official investigation.
The employer was later convicted and sentenced to a year and eight months in jail.
