Woman of the Day Annie Kenney born OTD 1879 in Oldham. A cotton mill worker from the age of ten - one of her fingers was ripped off by a spinning bobbin - her life changed when she heard Christabel Pankhurst speak at the Oldham Clarion Vocal Club.

In 1905, Annie and Christabel attended a meeting at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, where Winston Churchill and the Foreign Secretary were speaking. Annie, with a homemade ‘Votes for Women’ banner hidden in her clothing, asked "Will the Liberal government give votes to women?" and was ignored. She asked again and was pulled back into her seat so she unfurled her banner. The two women were dragged out of the meeting.

Christabel, knowing that they had not done enough to grab public attention, made a dry spit at a policeman (she later said ‘It was more of a pout’) and the two were sent to HMP Strangeways for seven days after refusing to pay a fine. They also secured a piece in The Times, thus raising the WPSU’s profile nationally.

Annie was the only working-class woman to reach the top of WSPU’s hierarchy. She was a charismatic speaker with a knack for carrying out daring and high profile stunts: unfurling banners at the Albert Hall, climbing on the roof with a megaphone after being barred entry to a meeting, organising women to evade the 1911 census by travelling around in a caravan. One way or another, she made her voice heard. She was also an effective organiser, drawing recruits and donors to the cause and in 1907, moved to Bristol to set up the WSPU’s West of England branch.

When the WSPU leadership was arrested in 1912 and Christabel fled to Paris, Annie ran the organisation in London, travelling each week to Paris to receive instructions.

In total, Annie was jailed thirteen times. At one point, offered the choice of six weeks in prison or giving up campaigning for a year, Annie chose prison. She was forcefed many times. At a meeting held just after one of her releases, she was carried into the hall by stretcher where she only had the strength to flutter a handkerchief at the audience. She left by horse-drawn ambulance.
