Occasional, properly administered spanking as punishment for misbehavior is likely neutral or even beneficial for children, rather than inherently harmful.

Physical discipline is common in the animal kingdom, for example mother dogs/cats growling, snapping, or lightly biting pups/kittens to correct behavior.

Humans have used corporal punishment for millennia and modern bans are a very recent development.

Most studies linking spanking to worse outcomes i.e. aggression, mental health issues, etc. fail to account for shared genetics between parents and children. "Bad" child behavior (partly genetic) leads parents to punish more and punishment doesn’t necessarily cause the problems.

Behavioral genetics studies suggest 60–80% of the spanking outcome link is genetic.

Horrific abuse cases don’t prove that mild spanking is damaging. Claims of long term trauma are often based on retrospective self reports from neurotic adults.
