Origins is a digital trading card game, but its community should go far beyond that.
Local game stores play a huge role in building communities for traditional TCGs. They teach new players, organize regular and give collectors a place to meet people who care about the same game.
And local tournaments are often the place to win the coolest loot.
That's why we're building a program that supports local game shops for Origins:
Participating stores will be able to accept preorders for Origins collectible products and receive a share of the revenue. Because the cards, packs, boxes, and cases will exist as Steam inventory items, stores will not need to purchase stock, hold physical inventory, allocate shelf space, or handle fulfillment.
This means it costs literally $0 to be a part of the program, but you share the up-side just as much, if not more, than you would with a physical TCG.
In return, participating stores will host organized-play events. Origins will direct players toward those locations and support stores as local hubs for the game.
Some collectible rewards will only enter the ecosystem through these events.
Unique promo cards, along with special packs, will be earned by attending and competing at participating stores. Origins will not sell those tournament cards or place them in standard packs.
This program allows us to grow together with our community:
• Stores get to benefit from Origins set releases
• Players gain a recurring place to meet, learn, compete & win unique promos
• Origins develops an organized-play network that can grow from quarterly local events toward more frequent competition, regional events, and eventually a world championship structure
Origins is digital by design. Its community still deserves real places to gather.
Origins will be the first card game to introduce digital game shops
We're giving our community, creators and local game stores a new way to grow alongside the game
Announcing the official prizepool breakdown for the Origins TCG Crimson Cup
The pool consists of a split between prize money, collectibles and exclusive promo cards
The tournament starts with Steam Next Fest in two weeks!
After spending over 7 hours streaming @origins_tcg last night, I have thoughts...
This is easily one of the most refreshing digital card games I've ever played. It takes the enjoyable gameplay elements from Snap & Hearthstone while aiming to avoid the negative. Stay tuned.
Over the last decade, indie games have become true contenders to the BIG budget AAA games that used to dominate gaming.
Players are tired of safe games that spend more time innovating new ways to monetize rather than new ways to play.
Just look at games like Meccha Chameleon, Slay the Spire 2 and How to fish.
Players want more innovation
Players want more fun
And players don’t want to be squeezed for every dollar they have!
This is why games like @origins_tcg and @PlayGuildrun will keep winning with players.
How do Origins TCG sets work?
As you know we're taking a lot of inspiration from other games for our economy. For set releases it's first and foremost physical TCGs.
- Sealed product
- Limited print runs
- Defined release periods
- LGS
Here's the details:
1. The Alpha Edition
The first Origins set is Myths and Legends, containing 218 characters. Its first-edition collectible release is Alpha Edition.
Alpha Edition will only be available through the Kickstarter. Every Alpha card will carry an Alpha tag on the card face so the edition remains identifiable forever. A character may appear again in a later set, but the Alpha Edition version and its Alpha tag will not.
Once the Alpha window closes, Origins will not issue additional Alpha cards, packs, booster boxes, or cases.
2. The collectible set cycle
Origins plans to release a new set every 3 to 4 months. Standard sets will have a 3-month sale window during which collectible cards and sealed products will be distributed through Origins, participating local game stores, and approved online partners.
Afterward, the only available copies will be the cards, packs, booster boxes, and cases already owned by collectors. Those items can be traded through the Steam Community Market.
3. Sealed supply
Packs, booster boxes, and cases will exist as individual Steam inventory items. Collectors can open them, trade them, or leave them sealed. Booster boxes and cases will only be available through preorder.
This allows sealed product to remain part of the collection instead of becoming a temporary purchase screen that disappears after opening.
4. What limited supply does and does not mean
Limited supply creates verifiable scarcity. It does not guarantee demand, market value, or price appreciation. All of these will be determined by collectors on the secondary market.
The limited supply also applies only to collectible versions. Every base gameplay card will remain free to every player, so an edition closing will never remove a card from the game.
5. How rarity is created
A collectible card can differ across several layers:
- Edition
- Rarity
- Grade
- Digital condition
- Promo status
These layers give our cards a lot of depth and allows us to make a particular collectible more specific without changing what the card does in a match.
6. How grading works
The contents of a sealed pack are determined before the pack is opened. When a collectible card is revealed, the system rolls its grade.
Grading is automatic, instant, and free. The card is evaluated across centering, corners, edges, and surface, with visible digital defects explaining the result. Grades range from 1 to 10, including half grades.
Because grade and card rarity are separate, two copies of the same card and art treatment can still be meaningfully different collectibles.
This is our approach to set releases. If you want to learn more join our community and make sure to try our demo on Steam!
To pass the time until Steam Next Fest arrives we're hosting a "Building Origins" event this Friday (9pm UTC)

The real question is, what happens when people realize you can compete with a completely free deck for digital tradable graded cards, with pop rates as low as 1/1, like the Dracula tournament card below!
Players and Collectors, prepare yourself accordingly……
The ultimate grand prize: A 1/1 Dracula tournament promo only awarded to the winner of the Crimson Cup
One of the rarest Origins cards to ever exist
Who's ready to win it?
And another change that's worth a special mention:
You can now play the Origins demo in different languages, like German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Portugese, Russian, Japanese, simplified Chinese and Korean.
Please share your feedback on the new languages!
It’s time to make my first and hopefully last public apology.
I apologize for trying to paint @koingamesio & @origins_tcg as something we're not, and myself as something I'm not.
•Koin is not a AAA studio with a giant team and budget. Koin Games IS an indie studio filled with a passionate team of competitors, collectors, and builders.
•Origins is not our third or fifth hit game together. It's our 1st game as a studio (though many on the Koin team have built hit games together before), and it's the game we believe the genre and the players deserve: the 1st Free-2-Compete TCG with digital cards you actually own.
•And I am not an experienced CEO. I am a 1st-time founder who, after 15+ years of building one of the largest sales teams in tech, left it all and risked the millions I saved to build something I believed in.
The truth is that building Origins has been by far the hardest thing I've ever done. Partly because it's my first time, partly because good games are extremely difficult to build, and partly because we are trying to do something that has never been done before.
Now, after 4+ years of building, failing, pivoting, failing, and pivoting again, things are finally starting to look pretty good (1M+ trailer views, 16,000+ demo downloads, 97% positive on Steam, almost 200 creators in our community). All thanks to not giving up, the incredible team we have, and, frankly, thanks to YOU!
So thank you to every player, collector, and creator who has supported us over the last 4 years. We wouldn't be here without you, and over the next few months we will need you and many others more than ever!
To finish, I don't believe an apology means anything unless you make a real change…
So from now on, I'm committing to talking about the wins, the challenges, and the mistakes. And I commit to asking for more help from the people we are building for. Starting now.
So if you're a fan of fair competition, real collecting, or just backing indie teams, here are a few ways you can help…
Play Origins, invite friends or enemies, back the Alpha Edition Kickstarter (Oct 27th), make some content, heck, even share this post, or simply follow along as we try to change competitive gaming and collecting forever!
Oh and in the spirit of building in public, here is my real face.

Thank you for being the community's voice inside the Parallel Team, Mookah!
Your work, and the impact of what you worked on, was felt and appreciated by everyone in TILT and beyond. Personally, I really appreciated your candor, transparency, and understanding. As a fellow community member, you understood that no matter how impassioned community feedback could get, it was all borne of an intense desire to see the game succeed. You are one of the clear reasons I've stuck around this long. Thank you for everything you've done for //, for the community, and for TILT. ❤️
Looking forward to seeing where you land in the future. Whatever game or project that might be, they'll be more than lucky to have you.
