Many people misuse the word Jihad without understanding its true meaning in Islam.

Jihad is not terrorism. Jihad is not kidnapping. Jihad is not banditry. Jihad is not the killing of innocent people.

In Islam, Jihad means striving in the cause of Allah through lawful and righteous means. It includes struggling against one’s own desires, speaking the truth, seeking knowledge, helping the oppressed, and defending oneself when attacked under strict Islamic rules.

What some bandits and terrorists are doing today cannot be called Jihad. They attack innocent villagers, kidnap people for ransom, destroy communities, and spread fear. These actions are condemned in Islam.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely.” (Qur’an 5:32)

If these criminal acts were truly Jihad, then every sincere Muslim would be involved in them. But Muslims around the world reject terrorism because it contradicts the teachings of Islam.

A terrorist may claim to be a Muslim, just as criminals can be found among followers of any religion. However, a person’s crimes do not represent the teachings of his religion. Every community has good people and bad people.

Before accusing Islam or calling banditry “Jihad,” take time to learn what Jihad really means from authentic Islamic sources. Let us be fair, truthful, and knowledgeable rather than spreading misinformation.

May Allah guide us to the truth and protect our societies from ignorance, violence, and injustice. Ameen.
