EL PROBLEMA NO ES SOLO DONALD TRUMP

Donald Trump roza la presidencia de EEUU. A sus votantes no les importa que sea racista, xenófobo, misógino, autoritario, machista y un delincuente convicto. De hecho, le han votado por ese motivo. La América blanca y protestante no soporta la diversidad que circula por “la tierra de los hombres libres y el hogar de los valientes”. Los inmigrantes latinos con papeles tampoco sienten simpatía por los sus compatriotas. El bote salvavidas está demasiado lleno y podría hundirse si recoge a más gente. Los hombres contemplan con resentimiento la creciente influencia de las mujeres y los amantes de las armas no soportan la idea de que se impongan restricciones, a pesar de los 6O0 tiroteos anuales. Un sector mayoritario de la sociedad estadounidense empieza a desconfiar de la democracia. Prefiere un gobierno autoritario que proteja su seguridad, aunque sea a costa de recortar libertades. Con la Cámara, el Senado y el Tribunal Supremo en manos de los republicanos, EEUU inicia un viaje hacia el pasado. Vuelven los tiempos del macartismo. Las medidas contra el cambio climático se congelarán y el nacionalismo más agresivo podrá ondear sus banderas sin mala conciencia. Las feministas, los inmigrantes, las personas LGTBI y las personas de ideas progresistas serán tratadas como el “enemigo interno”. En política internacional, se abrirá la veda para aplastar a los más débiles. Los palestinos serán definitivamente expulsados de Gaza y Cisjordania. Netanyahu podrá finalizar su campaña de limpieza étnica. La Rusia de Putin incrementará su poder y la ultraderecha continuará su ascenso en la UE y América Latina.

Este giro no es solo es obra de Trump y de los medios de comunicación controlados por las elites financieras. Este nuevo fascismo es fruto de un desencanto colectivo. La socialdemocracia ya no transmite credibilidad. Los Obama y los Clinton asimilaron enseguida los hábitos de las elites. Gracias a su paso por el poder, se hicieron millonarios y pudieron acceder a ese mundo de privilegios que antes criticaban. En España, la socialdemocracia ha arrojado un balance parecido. La especulación inmobiliaria ha proseguido su curva ascendente, convirtiendo la vivienda en un bien casi inaccesible. Los bancos han incrementado sus ganancias y los servicios públicos se ha deteriorado. No está de más recordar que Felipe González lideró la guerra sucia contra el terrorismo, toleró la corrupción y envió al paro a miles de trabajadores con la reconversión industrial. Sus sucesores no actuaron de forma tan despiadada, pero sus políticas sociales fueron tibias e insuficientes. O abiertamente regresivas, como la reforma de las pensiones aprobada por Zapatero, que endureció las condiciones para acceder a una jubilación decente.

En cuanto a la nueva izquierda, se ha desinflado enseguida. Por sus querellas cainitas, por la incongruencia entre las declaraciones públicas y las conductas privadas, por su retórica demagógica y sus extravagancias ideológicas. No aceptar que esa estrategia ha conducido al fracaso solo debilita la posibilidad de que reaparezca con propuestas más convincentes. La sociedad se está transformando en una masa amorfa. El auge de las pantallas y el declive de la cultura ha contribuido al éxito de los mensajes esquemáticos y simplistas. La democracia se está muriendo ante nuestros ojos. Y no es por culpa de Trump, Orban, Meloni, Milei, Netanyahu o Abascal, sino un desencanto generalizado que está avivando conductas irracionales, como el odio y el resentimiento. Estamos en el umbral de una verdadera crisis de civilización y no sabemos cómo acabará, pero con la victoria de Trump, todo sugiere que se nos viene una riada de fango dispuesta a no dejar títere con cabeza.

Fifty percent of this country just voted against our Democracy. I have disdain for that. I am today not proud to be an American. Today, I will struggle to stand for our anthem. I love America, but I am disgusted by those who could vote for this. I will move on and live my life, away from social media and the reality of this outcome.
