“Knowledge is now worth zero” is such a bad take for so many reasons.

I agree that knowledge isn’t worth anything if it’s just a verifiable fact. What’s 1+ 1? Who was the President in 1864? Etc. This information is worthless.

But anytime there is nuance, preference, or decision-making under uncertainty, then knowledge matters.

The reason is simple—lots of questions don’t have a correct answer.

And when they don’t have a correct answer, knowledge is how you weigh the tradeoffs to make the best decision.

AI is very bad at this because you can gaslight it to agree with anything. It never stands its ground.

How can such a thing replace lived experience? It can’t.

Knowledge is still valuable. Don’t let the doomers fool you.

Estate planning exercise for married couples:

List every single asset you own (bank account, investment account, car, trailer, home, cottage, etc)

Make 3 columns and identify where the assets will fall into:

1. Joint
2. Beneficiary/Successor
3. Estate

The jointly owned items transfer to the surviving spouse due to joint tenancy.

The accounts where you are able to (and have) named a beneficiary/successor will transfer to the surviving spouse because you've named them as your beneficiary or successor holder (think RRSP / RRIF / TFSA / FHSA / LIRA / LIF / Life Insurance).

What's left? The assets that are solely in your name (ie. not joint) and you are unable to name a beneficiary. Those end up in your estate. It's only these where your Will has jurisdiction. It's only these that are subject to Probate.

Now think to yourself, can I optimize this? Do those assets in the estate bucket need to be in the estate bucket? Can they be joint to streamline this process for my spouse if I pass?

Also think, I have a Will but it might not capture the assets I thought it would because the majority of my assets are owned jointly or have a beneficiary... maybe you need to refine this. If for example you have a spousal trust in your Will, do sufficient assets actually fall into the estate to make the spousal trust function as intended?

It's a useful exercise, and one I do for my clients, and update annually.
