Shaykh Shams Tameez & Dr. Omar Quraishi have a great conversation about this subject, its historic & modern importance & application. Watch & Share.
"One might ask how a trial can be described as grievous or repugnant when it occurs by divine decree and returns ultimately to the creative act of God. The response is that the trial itself may be described as good or repugnant, but it is not identical with the divine act. Rather, it is the object produced by that act. The divine act consists in subjecting one to trial, and it is possible for the act itself to be wise and praiseworthy while the object produced is, in itself, something undesirable." ~ Dr. Hamza Bakri.
New Book!
I am very excited for this one. Anyone who knows me knows that one of my favorite scholars is Imam Ibn Juzay, a distinguished Andalusian scholar from al-Andalus. And among my favorite of his works is his tafsir.
Soon, In shaa Allah, the English translation of his tafsir will finally be on bookshelves. What I love most about this tafsir is how easy it is to read. The explanations are not overly lengthy but you will find much barakah and benefit from reading it. It is one of the best Tafsirs for one learning Arabic to start off with.
Imam Ibn Juzay was also a scholar of the Maliki madhhab, which makes this tafsir valuable for students of Maliki fiqh as well.
It is translated by Aisha Bewley who does amazing work, long with a foward by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and revised by Dr. Sohaib Saeed.
Looking forward to reading it in English.

As many of you are aware that we are now running our 12th course at Open Madrasa, in the Art of Islamic Debate. All praise is to Allah, and my gratitude to you that have supported and believed in us since the beginning. You know who you are, and so do we. Allah bless you and increase your rizq.
We have around 7 students from the UK and Pakistan (mostly Pakistan) who want to take this course but cannot afford the fees, despite the fact that we’ve tried to accommodate them. Some of them are studying in Madrasas and cannot afford the fees. We really don’t want that to be a barrier for them. They have the heart, but not the means. This course is crucial as it teaches them the art of Islamic debate, which will be crucial for them in their d’awā work later.
So, we are putting this message out to any well wishing folk, whom Allah has blessed with the means, to help them on their journey and give them the support they need. Any support is appreciated, however, to cover an entire student’s fee is £195. If you can help, BismiLlah. If you cannot, then please remember them and us in your prayers in these blessed days of Hajj.

Read here: “A Very Short History of Ādāb al-Baḥth wa’l-Munāẓarah.” This concise essay serves as a short introduction to the historical development of inquiry, dialectics, and formal debate within the Islamic intellectual tradition.

Ibn Khaldūn said:
“As for dialectics (jadal), which is the knowledge of the principles and etiquettes of disputation (ādāb al-munāẓarah) conducted between the adherents of the legal schools and others, the field of debate in rejection and acceptance is exceedingly vast. Each disputant, in argumentation and response, gives free rein to himself in adducing proofs, some of which are sound and some erroneous. Thus, the leading scholars found it necessary to establish principles, rules, and etiquettes by which the disputants would remain confined within proper limits in rejection and acceptance.
They clarified the state and role of the one adducing proof (al-mustadill) and the respondent (al-mujīb), when it is permissible for one to function as the adducer of proof, how a disputant may become restricted or rendered incapable of continuing, the proper place of objection and counterargument, and where silence becomes obligatory upon him, leaving speech and argumentation to his opponent.”

Last night I was honoured to complete Sharh al-Aqa’id with my teacher Shaykh Shams Tameez @ShamsTameez! All of this is by the Tawfiq of Allah and I cannot understate the feeling of joy for such a big accomplishment. May Allah make me sincere in this endeavour, allow me to continue this path and allow me to benefit the Ummah through it. Ameen
For those immersed in Islamic philosophy, a central question arises: how can the Divine Attributes be dependent upon God, yet still be necessary and pre-eternal? The resolution lies in a careful understanding of prior and posterior, not in a temporal sense, but as relations of ontological dependence. Mastering this distinction is fundamental to Islamic ontology and to the theological precision of the tradition.
