Joseph Vijay’s Government decision to implement the Thaai Maman Thanga Modhiram Thittam is a highly regrettable, regressive, condemnable and a wasteful move. The TVK government has allocated 755 crores annually for this scheme. Is this Good Governance?

Instead of spending such a big amount for giving one gram gold ring to new born babies, that amount should be spent to improving the maternity wards and care in government hospitals with new tech and equipments, advanced treatments, better care from doctors and nurses with more of them covering the patients than the existing numbers, more clean and hygienic environments, better basic facilities like electricity supply, cots and beds, air conditioning, etc. Won’t the voters especially the women and mothers prefer these compared to a one gram gold ring?

To the women and feminists who support Vijay - Don’t you see an inherent patriarchal mindset in this scheme and the to be implemented “Gold Thaali through Annan Seer Thittam” scheme? Why should an elder brother be giving these? Isn’t it a regressive patriarchal chauvinistic expectation that a male member of the family - a brother should provide such gold ornaments for women and her babies? Really? And is Vijay or a male going to be the eternal Chief Minister of TN? What will happen if a woman from TVK or other parties become the CM?

CM Vijay need not indulge in such freebies to capture the hearts of TN people. TN voters didn’t vote for him for such freebies. They voted with the hope that he will provide good governance and improve their lives and livelihood. For that money needs to be spent in improving healthcare, education, law and order (especially for women) etc and not in providing gold ring and gold thaali as Maaman and Annan Seer.

Our rural school Kalaivani Kalvi Maiyam, which provides completely free education to rural children, faced delays getting approvals from the previous government. Of course, significant money was demanded and we were told that was the only way, even if it is a completely free school.

After @TVKVijayHQ came to power, approvals have happened quickly and automatically.

At the @IndianExpress Adda, I spoke about how politics can be unforgiving. We competed fiercely with the previous DMK government in Tamil Nadu for investments - won some, lost some.

But I never heard an investor complain of being asked for money by the government. Credit where it's due: the DMK government ran a clean and professional investment process and that deserves appreciation.
