New machine news: I now have the new 32-core threadripper system that @tekwendell built for me in production. And it's fast all right, but the most interesting news is the Linux distribution I switched to.
I wanted a rolling-release distro. I also wanted a package system with a full dependency solver, which steered me away from Arch. And finally, I wanted Snapper to work so that if I ever got myself in trouble with a bad system upgrade, backing down to a known good configuration would be as simple as choosing a different boot menu entry.
Having done the research, only openSUSE Tumbleweed met all three criteria.
Now I've used it for a couple of weeks and can report that my experience has been very positive. Zypper looks a little different if you're used to Debian apt, but seems to be equally solid.
Recommended.
