“For Stonking Stingray, my goal was to capture the stingray’s grace and elegance. I refined the shape to more closely resemble the actual animal, with wide fins sweeping gracefully into the body and a long tail that creates a natural sense of movement in the design."

How do you monitor wildlife in places where infrastructure is limited?

Some of the world's most valuable biodiversity data comes from remote, hard-to-reach locations, where researchers can't rely on traditional connectivity or computing.

This is what the Open Science Conservation Fund is working to solve with Trapper, an open source platform that helps researchers analyze camera trap data closer to where it's collected.

This demo, running on Ubuntu and Canonical Kubernetes, uses NextComputing’s fly-away kit - a portable edge computing system that can be carried into remote locations and deployed wherever it's needed, making it easier to turn observations into knowledge that the global scientific community can build on.

Every space mission begins long before launch day.

Ideas become spacecraft. Thousands of decisions are made before a single engine ignites. The European Space Agency (ESA) knows what that journey looks like.

As the agency prepares to increase the missions it supports by 2030, it is laying the groundwork for decades of future exploration.

Working with Canonical, ESA is building a common platform for mission operations based on open source. Kubernetes, Ceph, PostgreSQL, and Kafka form ESA’s infrastructure foundation.
