Mitochondria might defend you from infection, not just power your cells.
New research shows MOTS-C, a peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA, behaves like a host defense molecule. It directly damaged bacterial membranes in E. coli and MRSA, and in a mouse model of MRSA peritonitis it fully neutralized infectivity.
It also pushed developing immune cells toward macrophages with better bacterial clearance.
Two fronts at once. Attacking the pathogen and training the defense.
Still animal data. Still early. But it rewrites what mitochondria are for.
SS 31 does not act like a typical antioxidant. It binds directly to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found exclusively on the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing the structure where ATP is actually produced.
This targeted mechanism protects the electron transport chain and supports more efficient cellular energy output, which is why it is being studied across cardiac, neurological, renal, and musculoskeletal aging research.
In 2025, elamipretide (SS 31) became the first mitochondria targeted therapeutic to receive FDA approval, cleared to improve muscle strength in patients with Barth syndrome, a rare and life limiting mitochondrial disease.

TB-500 is the synthetic research analogue of Thymosin Beta-4, a naturally occurring peptide found in human tissues.
Preclinical literature associates it with:
• Enhanced cell migration
• Actin regulation support
• Angiogenesis signaling
• Soft tissue repair pathways
• Inflammatory modulation
• Muscle, tendon & ligament recovery models
• Cardiac repair signaling
Because it influences cytoskeletal dynamics, TB-500 is studied for its role in systemic tissue remodeling rather than site specific repair.
It remains one of the more biologically active regenerative peptides discussed in research & performance medicine circles.
Link in bio.
BPC-157 is one of the most studied regenerative peptides in preclinical literature.
Reported mechanisms & observed effects include:
• Tendon & ligament repair support
• Muscle recovery acceleration
• Gut lining protection
• Enhanced angiogenesis
• Collagen organization support
• Inflammatory modulation
• Nerve regeneration signaling
• Improved tissue remodeling
Derived from a protective gastric protein fragment, BPC-157 continues to draw attention in regenerative research & performance medicine circles.
