Freddie and John’s final tour with the greatest band ever 🥹
Queen was officially formed in London in 1970. The band traces its origins to an earlier group called Smile, formed in 1968 by guitarist Brian May and bassist Tim Staffell, who were later joined by drummer Roger Taylor.
Freddie Mercury (then known as Farrokh Bulsara) was a friend and big fan of Smile. When Tim Staffell left the band in 1970, Freddie joined as the lead singer and proposed changing the name to Queen.
In 1971, bassist John Deacon joined, completing the classic lineup that would last for decades.
They recorded their first album (Queen, 1973) at Trident Studios, but their early years were tough: they played in small clubs, lived on a shoestring budget, and Freddie even sold clothes at Kensington Market alongside Roger.
"This is a video which we all kind of hated doing, I have to say, at the time, and it’s for a song called 'It’s A Hard Life'—one of Freddie’s most beautiful songs, I think, 'It’s A Hard Life.' It’s about the pain of love, really, but Freddie chose to make a kind of spoof video… We got bored shitless. Roger and Deacy completely hated this whole thing and, I guess, with the benefit of hindsight, I think it actually was a good decision—we had an unwritten law that whoever wrote the song would decide the theme for the video, so Freddie wrote this song, so he got the choice, and we didn’t like it at the time, but I kind of like it now, because I think it gets the message across quite well, in a sense."

I love that David Bowie's and Brian May's reactions were captured when Annie Lennox gives it everything, and that George Michael singing along in the back! Fantastic video and the very best music.
