The powers that be don’t want people to know this, but the main reason the Japanese in WW2 would fight to the last man, even do kamikaze attacks & all that, & seem unwilling to negotiate or surrender even after it was clear to everyone that they couldn’t win, wasn’t that they were “just crazy” - they believed (not unjustifiably) that if they tried to negotiate or surrender they’d be massacred anyway.

And there were enough instances of exactly this happening on a pretty large scale in the aftermath of some of the big Pacific Island battles when “Japs”WERE trying to surrender that their belief wasn’t unfounded.

Plus they had seen a lot of the ultra-racist American war propaganda against them that described all “Japs” as “vermin” to be “exterminated”, etc, too.

(Interestingly, the anti-American Japanese propaganda in the war largely focused on demonizing American & allied leaders; the anti-Japanese American propaganda did that too, but also did a lot of dehumanizing & demonizing of the entire Japanese “race.”)

Long story short, if you have a reputation for good faith negotiations, treating leaders & common people fairly & humanely once they’re willing to stop fighting against you, avoid the crazy dehumanizing propaganda (because the people you demonize in your propaganda WILL see that propaganda), etc, (basically doing the exact opposite of what the American & Israeli regimes have been doing so far in this conflict), you’re WAAAAY more likely to have your opponent be willing, often eager, to negotiate an end to the slaughter, especially in once he believes he can’t realistically win.

Read the work of esteemed historian John Dower for much more detail on this. His book War without Mercy is a good place to start.

Even the semi-Neocon historian Niall Ferguson covered this stuff accurately & fairly in his War of the World, which is a pretty solid book overall. He was less Neocon when he wrote it than he seems now. Full-blown Neocons actually bashed him for that when that book was published in 2007.
