Miguna Miguna deserves to be remembered as one of Kenya’s most consequential political figures of his generation.

A lawyer, author, activist, constitutionalist and unapologetic critic of power, Miguna has spent decades occupying an uncomfortable but important space in Kenya’s political life.

He has challenged governments, confronted political giants, endured exile, fought his battles in court and refused to become permanently loyal to any political establishment.

You may disagree with Miguna. Many do. But disagreement should not erase significance.

Kenya’s political history is not written only by presidents, MPs and those who hold office. It is also shaped by the men and women who challenge authority, expose contradictions, demand accountability and force the country to confront difficult questions.

Miguna has done that repeatedly.

From the struggle against authoritarianism and his years in exile, to his work around Raila Odinga, the 2018 political crisis and his continuing interventions on constitutionalism and governance, his life has intersected with some of the defining chapters of modern Kenya.

His greatest contribution may ultimately be the reminder that political courage is not always comfortable, popular or convenient.

History will debate Miguna Miguna.

But history cannot ignore him.

A Kenyan political icon. A controversial figure, certainly. But an important one.

The Guma is a traditional dance of the Guidar people of northern Cameroon, particularly associated with the Guider/Mayo-Louti region.

Performed by both women and men, it combines music, movement, ceremonial dress and warrior symbolism. Traditionally linked to courage, communal identity and the memory of warfare, the dance remains an important expression of Guidar cultural heritage.

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting with the Chinese delegation to UN-Habitat, led by H.E. Ms. Wenhua Zhao, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to UN-Habitat.

China has consistently been a strong champion of multilateralism and a steadfast partner in advancing the work and mandate of UN-Habitat. I took the opportunity to congratulate China on its assumption of the Presidency of the UN-Habitat Executive Board and to reaffirm Kenya’s support for its leadership.

In my capacity as Chair of the Executive Board’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Programmatic, Budgetary and Administrative Matters, I assured H.E. Ms. Zhao of Kenya’s commitment to working closely with China in strengthening the effectiveness of the Board and supporting UN-Habitat in delivering on its mandate.

We look forward to deepening our longstanding multilateral cooperation with China and working together to ensure that UN-Habitat remains strong, responsive and well-positioned to advance sustainable urbanization globally.
