What happens when students stop just watching lessons… and start stepping inside them?
This @WPLGLocal10 feature takes a closer look at how VR and AI are reshaping the classroom experience in South Florida, including a look inside Optima Academy Online.

Summer may be here, but we already miss our scholars. 💙
We’re holding onto these sweet moments from our 5th and 8th grade promotion ceremonies as we celebrate all our students accomplished this year. From big smiles to proud families to milestone memories, Friday was a beautiful reminder of how special the OAO community truly is.
Enjoy your summer, scholars. We’ll see you again in August. ✨
What happens when history, science, and curiosity collide?
In middle school science with Ms. Orlando, our 8th graders didn’t just learn about the universe… they stepped into it.
Students traveled back to the early 1500s to work alongside Nicolaus Copernicus, building a heliocentric model at a time when the world believed Earth was at the center. From there, they moved into the 1600s to meet Galileo Galilei, exploring his observations and seeing how evidence can challenge long-held beliefs.
And then… things got interesting.
Galileo followed them back.
Suddenly, a 17th-century scientist found himself inside a space base, joining our students on a journey through the solar system. When the mission hit a challenge and fuel ran out, students applied their understanding of matter and energy to solve the problem and get everyone safely home.
By the end, Galileo returned to his place in time. Timeline restored.
But what stayed with our students went far beyond the adventure.
Through immersive learning, they didn’t just study history’s greatest thinkers. They experienced what it means to question ideas, follow evidence, and stand behind what you know is true.
And those conversations after the journey? That’s where learning really took hold.
When students step into the role, learning takes on a whole new dimension.
Our 8th graders entered a virtual Supreme Court of the United States, taking on the roles of attorneys and justices as they argued an appeals case in VR. They presented claims, backed them with evidence, and responded to challenging questions—just like in a real courtroom.
What stood out most was not just their understanding, but their confidence, critical thinking, and ability to engage in thoughtful, respectful discourse.
When students are immersed, challenged, and given ownership of their learning, they rise to the occasion.
And that’s where learning truly sticks.

Today, we pause. We remember. We honor.
To every service member who gave everything so others could live freely, thank you. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.
From all of us at Optima Academy Online, we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸
What happens when history, literature, and math all connect?
In Ms. Arreola’s class, students used their understanding of the Great Depression to bring deeper meaning to Bud, Not Buddy—exploring why characters make the choices they do in such challenging circumstances.
Then, they took that learning even further.
Students built their own Hoovervilles and applied their decimal skills to manage life on a limited budget, turning math into something tangible and real.
When students can connect ideas across subjects, learning doesn’t just make sense. It sticks.
At Optima Academy Online, learning moves beyond the screen and into the experience. Students don’t just study history, science, or literature. They step into it, exploring concepts through immersive VR, guided by real teachers within a classically aligned curriculum.
It’s a different kind of school day. One that’s designed to engage, challenge, and stick.

Art class with Ms. Stovall took us on a trip to the Netherlands… and into a mystery.
Our 3rd graders explored the work of Clara Peeters, a master of still-life painting known for hiding meaning in everyday objects. Along the way, students discovered how artists use symbolism to tell stories beneath the surface.
With curiosity leading the way, they put their inference skills to the test—studying each detail, asking questions, and uncovering clues within the artwork.
And yes… there was a hidden self-portrait.
Can you spot it? 👀
Behind every confident student is a mom who showed up, stayed patient, and never stopped believing. 💜
Today, we celebrate the heart, the encouragement, and the quiet strength that mothers bring to every learning journey. From early mornings to late-night support, your impact reaches far beyond the classroom.
To all the incredible OAO moms, thank you for being the foundation of your child’s success. Happy Mother’s Day.

Students in Ms. Messer’s class became theme park designers, bringing text structures to life at Optima Academy Online.
Using virtual reality, they transformed concepts into immersive attractions, from cause-and-effect coasters to problem-and-solution escape rooms and side-by-side compare-and-contrast tracks.
Each build turned abstract ideas into something students could see, move through, and experience.
When learning becomes something you design, understanding goes deeper and sticks longer.

Big moments on and off the court 👏
OAO 7th grader Abbey O’Neil showed up strong at her volleyball tournament, helping her team secure two wins and a spot in the semifinals. With standout serves and an incredible point-saving bump over the net, Abbey proved what dedication looks like in action.
And the best part? Being cheered on by her teacher, Shelby Orlando. This is what the OAO community is all about—supporting students as they pursue excellence wherever their passions take them.
Congratulations Abbey! We are so proud of you ❤️🏐
Ms. Ruholt’s 10th grade U.S. History students brought their Civil War capstones to life at Optima Academy Online.
Using virtual reality, students created immersive, museum-style exhibits that blend research, first-person narrative, symbolism, and visual design.
These aren’t just projects. They’re stories students can step inside, with some even adding voice narration to create a true museum experience.
When learning becomes something you build and experience, history stays with you.
