"Choose NPS, Save Tax," But After 25 Years, ₹20,000/Month Could Still Leave You With Less Than a Mutual Fund.
An investor compared Corporate NPS with an Equity Mutual Fund.
Assume the employer invests ₹20,000 every month and the money remains untouched for 25 years.
Assumptions
NPS return 10%
Equity MF return 12%
Investment period 3 years
Withdrawal at age 60
According to the calculation
NPS
₹20,000/month
around ₹91.3 lakh
Equity Mutual Fund
₹13,760/month after tax
around ₹1 crore
So despite NPS offering a significant upfront tax advantage,
the higher assumed equity returns allow the MF to come out ahead in this calculation.
But the real twist comes at retirement.
With NPS
60% can be withdrawn tax free
20% is taxable at the applicable rate
20% has to go into an annuity
Under this calculation, around ₹18.26 lakh gets locked into the annuity.
With an MF, there is no such mandatory annuity lock in,
and the money remains liquid after paying the applicable LTCG tax.
So the question should not just be
"How much tax will NPS save me ?"
The bigger question is
"After 25 years, how much money will actually be in my hands,
how much will be locked, and how much liquidity will I have ?"
That’s why looking only at the tax benefit may not tell the full NPS vs MF story.
On the Behalf of Youth from Jharkhand state we congratulate you for becoming Governor of Jharkhand.
Youths will reach new heights under your governorship

Wholesale Banking:

Note: All figures are quoted from the "Consolidated Statements" published by the bank for Q1FY26.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The sudden generosity of a first-time ever Bonus Issue 1:1 is now clear. The sole objective is to cushion the impact of the results on the retail investor (by giving 2 notes of Rs. 50 each instead of one note of Rs. 100.)
2. A massive jump in provisions of more than Rs. 10,000 cr shows that the bank may be anticipating significant retail loan defaults in the coming months.
3. The results are a worrying indicator for the overall economy, considering HDFC Bank’s nationwide exposure to average Indians.
It appears that the average Indian is financially struggling and is ready to default on their credit cards and personal loans.
