We’ve never been better financially.

Using the IPCC's mid-range emissions scenarios (i.e., SSP2-4.5 and SSP3-7.0), the authors of the new study model the distribution of 11 neotropical vanilla 🌱 species and seven bee species. 🐝

They find that vanilla plants may find more favorable conditions in some areas, but the pollinators may no longer be able to find suitable habitats, resulting in a significant reduction in vanilla yields and production, including a 60-90% by 2050 in species that rely on a single pollinator.

Vanilla production has also increased since 1961, but even if that reverses and these doom and gloom projections come to pass (remember, the authors say this “may” or “could” happen), what the media's spin on this paper gets wrong is that it will probably have very little effect on ice cream and other deserts that use vanilla flavoring.

More than 99% of vanilla flavoring used today is from synthetic vanillin, which is derived from guaiacol, a petroleum product that is chemically identical to the natural vanillin molecule.
