In artist Ana Mendieta’s Silueta Series, she pressed, carved, or traced the outline of her body into soil, sand, grass, and stone. Sometimes filled with flowers, fire, or water, these forms were never permanent. They eventually faded, were washed away, or burned out.
Without barriers or chemicals, the body is free to decompose naturally becoming soil, nourishing plants, sustaining ecosystems. Transforming and reintegrating into life.
