Packed auditorium for UKSF 2024 plenary session. Impressive line up of speakers for this panel discussion. Starting with discussion of NHS 10 year health plan. Stroke a major topic in this. For us, vision is a major topic within stroke care. @BIOS_Orthoptics@UKStrokeForum
Day 3 #AdventAgeing
Thinking of getting more exercise after all those mince pies?
We helped with the European Guidance on exercise and dementia, led by the fantastic @ilmannato
Seems that exercise can help both physical health and brain health

Day 1 UK Stroke Forum conference @UKStrokeForum Great to see so many colleagues already having been here less than an hour! First session on SSNAP. Interested to hear timelines and changes, especially with new vision questions added @BIOS_Orthoptics@livuninews@biosstrokeneuro
Final day at the Canadian Stroke Congress in Calgary. Another #Vision session this morning to share facts on common visual impairments occurring after stroke. How, why and what to do... Screen, refer, manage. @followIOA@canstroke@LivUni
Dynamic workshop at the Canadian Stroke Congress. Cold outside in Calgary but busy indoors. Great to talk though the VISA vision screening tool with practical session. Highlighting the many issues related to visual impairment. A worldwide unmet need for stroke survivors. @LivUni
More information in the British and Irish Orthoptic Society position statement and consensus statement for stroke and vision clinical practice. https://t.co/K9mv5HB2bE
Vision screening for stroke survivors in acute and community settings β what to do?
UK NICE Guidelines call for orthoptic-delivered (not orthoptic-led) blanket assessment of all stroke survivors. If not possible prior to discharge, then vision screen using a validated tool.
DO use the VISA screening tool. This is standardised AND validated AND has regulatory approval; all important for NHS/clinical use. It is FREE to use! https://t.co/TYUMpPVE25
DO NOT use checklists/questionnaires (eg BEFAST, VFAST, BIVI-IQ). These don't meet screening requirements
On World Stroke Day today, a reminder of how common visual impairment is due to stroke. Over 60% of stroke survivors develop visual problems. These are not always obvious or 'visible'. And - visual problems can be the only sign of stroke. Active vision screening needed - early!
More interesting cases to review at #ISA; https://t.co/sk1vqJIxC0 The latest being myopia-induced esotropia. ISA provides great opportunities & learning/update resources. Shout-out to Orthoptists re membership benefits. @followIOA@BIOS_Orthoptics@OrthopticsAU@FOREAOrthoptics
