This morning I heard serious #buzzing, saw bees fighting outside a #bee#nest in #lawn. 2 bumblebees attacking an Andrena Scotica mining bee. I filmed it as I’ve never witnessed it before ( I know honey bees defend hive) but this? @BumblebeeTrust@DaveGoulson@BBCSpringwatch
For anyone interested, here’s a pretty good rundown of why snake ID “rules” like head shape, slit pupils, etc are extremely unreliable! Most incorrect IDs I come across are by people relying on them. https://t.co/UG3iHceDQT
Here's a @ConversationUS piece I wrote on murder hornets & my experience w/them in Japan. 0 US cases in '20. If you find one, take a pic, many similar wasps. "Murder hornet" is misleading, Asian giant hornet is a bad name. Keep it simple: Giant hornet! https://t.co/Tj61A9p40K
Not to mention since their stings are much more severe than other wasps you really shouldn’t be messing with them yourself. They’re generally pretty docile but are incredibly defensive so don’t mess with them, especially a nest. Report it and let the state entomologists handle it
When 'mandarinia' is unique, international, and memorable, why does anyone need to make up a new "common" name, especially when the species may not have established in N America yet?
