In 1947, American General George Marshall ordered a large-scale survey of U.S. World War II infantry veterans in an attempt to understand how soldiers actually behaved in real combat. The results shocked the military establishment.
Fewer than 25% of American infantry soldiers fired their weapons directly at the enemy during battle. And only around 2% consciously aimed to kill.
A similar pattern appeared in military aviation. More than half of all enemy aircraft destroyed by American fighter pilots were credited to just 1% of pilots. Researchers discovered a disturbing reality: in combat situations where the enemy is seen face-to-face as another human being — infantry fighting, bayonet assaults, fighter dogfights — most people psychologically cannot kill.
The entire burden of violence falls on a tiny minority.
The situation changes completely when the enemy is distant or invisible. Artillery, tanks, naval bombardments, and strategic bombing proved vastly more effective. The farther a soldier is removed from direct human contact with the enemy, the easier killing becomes psychologically.
Military psychologists working for the Pentagon later uncovered even more disturbing facts.
Around 25% of soldiers lost control of their bowels or bladder before combat from extreme fear. Veterans openly admitted this happened regularly. One World War II veteran recalled wetting himself before his first battle in Germany, only for his commander to calmly show that he had done the same. “After that,” the commander told him, “the fear passes and you can function again.”
Another 25% temporarily lost the ability to fire their weapons altogether. Some experienced paralysis in the trigger finger or shooting arm immediately before battle. German military archives captured after World War II showed identical symptoms among Wehrmacht soldiers on the Eastern Front. The phenomenon was so widespread that German doctors often labeled it as “frostbite” affecting the firing hand.
Pentagon psychologists Swank and Marchand later concluded that after roughly 60 consecutive days of frontline combat, nearly 98% of soldiers suffered psychological collapse severe enough to remove them from effective combat.
And who were the remaining 2% who continued fighting?
According to the psychologists, those individuals were overwhelmingly people with psychopathic traits — men who already displayed abnormal psychological profiles long before entering military service.
The conclusion of these studies was deeply unsettling: human beings are biologically resistant to killing other human beings.
Throughout history, armies have repeatedly encountered this reality. Military records from earlier centuries showed the same phenomenon. Soldiers could perform perfectly on firing ranges against targets, yet in real battle most intentionally fired high, missed deliberately, or froze completely when confronting a living person.
Veterans from World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya, and countless other wars often described the same pattern: if a unit contained at least one ruthless, fearless individual capable of extreme violence, the entire unit had a much greater chance of survival. Without such a person, entire platoons could collapse under pressure.
One veteran of the Allied landings in France described a single soldier who practically carried an entire assault by himself. While dozens of men remained pinned down on the beach, this soldier advanced alone toward German bunkers, emptied magazines into firing slits, threw grenades inside, and forced surviving defenders to surrender. He repeated this multiple times during the same battle.
The veteran later said:
“On the surface he looked completely normal. You could drink coffee with him, joke with him, talk about ordinary things. But those of us who lived beside him knew something was deeply wrong inside him. He was absolutely fearless. And that’s not normal.”

They have never welcomed, and will never welcome, foreign intervention. Neighboring countries were mistaken in assuming they would need to close their borders to manage an influx of refugees fleeing war from Iran. Not only did Iranians refuse to flee the war zone, but many living abroad actually returned home by land once the conflict began.

3- Iran is a resilient nation that has endured decades of illegal sanctions, sadistic “maximum pressure” campaigns, covert operations, and outright war. It stood tall, relied solely on itself, and built a formidable military, industrial, and scientific base. By contrast, countries with far stronger economies are already complaining about the economic fallout from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and are growing impatient. Iran withstood their sanctions for nearly fifty years, yet they cannot tolerate fifty days of reciprocal economic pressure. Hopefully this reality will force them to recognize the depravity of their past policies.

4- Iran is not a state sponsor of terrorism. Its only “sin” has been to be the sole country on Earth that has firmly, openly, and proudly stood up to Israeli apartheid and genocidal policies. That is the real source of all the demonization.

5- Iran did not squander money—or the brief proceeds from temporary sanctions relief—on destabilizing the region. It invested in infrastructure instead. The sheer number of hospitals, airports, petrochemical plants, railroads, bridges, ports, pharmaceutical factories, and universities targeted in the war reveals exactly where that money was spent.

6- Iran did not seek war. It pursued serious diplomacy, only to be betrayed on multiple occasions. The United States withdrew from the JCPOA and then attacked Iran twice while new negotiations were underway. All the smears claiming that Iran fails to honor its international commitments or is prone to lying and cheating are pure nonsense unsupported by empirical evidence.

7- Iran’s foreign policy is guided by values, principles, and national pride rather than materialist “cost-benefit” calculations. Understanding this is essential to reaching any genuine deal. Otherwise, within a narrow “cost-benefit” paradigm, Israeli experts and think tanks will continue to rush to portray Iran’s intentions as hostile—just as they have done for decades by relentlessly disseminating the falsehood that Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons.

100,000 American troops in Europe = a free ride for Europeans?

Let's check the facts.

🔹 American military bases are not free
Germany, Italy, Spain, and Romania pay for the infrastructure, land, utilities, and civilian personnel of US bases. Germany alone contributes over $1 billion annually to support the American military presence on its soil.

🔹 Europe is the largest customer of the American defense industry
F-35s, Patriot missiles, HIMARS, Apaches — all purchased by Europeans with real money. Every security alarm in Europe translates into contracts for Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing.

🔹 American bases in Europe don't only protect Europe
Ramstein in Germany coordinates operations across Africa and the Middle East. Sigonella in Italy covers the Mediterranean and North Africa. Romania secures the eastern flank and the Black Sea. These are global American strategic assets — not neighborhood security for Europeans.

🔹 Command is American, not European
NATO is always led by an American Supreme Commander (SACEUR). Europe contributes troops, bases, and money — but America holds the controls. Those who control the structure are not the ones getting a free ride.

🔹 The nuclear umbrella is not altruism
American nuclear deterrence in Europe keeps the dollar as the world's reserve currency, keeps European markets open to US corporations, and legitimizes American hegemony against Russia and China.
But what would actually happen if America withdrew its troops from Europe?

🔹 For America — immediate strategic losses
Without bases in Europe, American response time to any crisis in Europe, Africa, or the Middle East grows from hours to days. Ramstein, Sigonella, and Incirlik cannot be replaced by aircraft carriers. Infrastructure built over decades disappears overnight.

🔹 The American defense industry loses its biggest customer
A Europe without the US umbrella will build its own defense industry — and fast. Airbus Military, KNDS, Leonardo, and Rheinmetall will take the contracts that Lockheed and Raytheon currently win. Billions of dollars shift from America to Europe.

🔹 The dollar weakens
Dollar hegemony is partly sustained by American global military credibility. A withdrawal from Europe signals to the world that America no longer guarantees the postwar order. Alternatives — the euro, the yuan — become more attractive as global reserve options.

🔹 Russia wins without firing a single shot
Not necessarily through immediate invasion — but through political influence, energy pressure, and the gradual destabilization of countries on the eastern frontier. The Baltic states, Poland, and Romania enter a security grey zone that no one can guarantee quickly.

🔹 China watches and draws conclusions about Taiwan
A precedent of withdrawal from Europe sends a direct signal to Beijing: American commitments are negotiable. The cost of deterrence in the Pacific rises exponentially.

Withdrawal is not isolationism. It is strategic abdication.
America would not be leaving Europe because it no longer has interests there.
It would be leaving while ignoring that those very interests are what make it a superpower.

The "free ride" narrative doesn't describe Europe.
It describes exactly what America has in Europe.
