Australian Electoral Commission is renaming the seat of Franklin to “Tongerlongeter” in honour of an Aboriginal tribal leader who fought the British in Tasmania.

Sir John Franklin was a British Royal Navy officer, explorer and colonial administrator. After serving in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, Sir John Franklin served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) from 1837 to 1843.

He was best known for leading the ill-fated 1845 expedition to discover the Northwest Passage, during which both of his ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, and all 129 crew members were lost.

Now his memory is erased in favour of another culture and another civilization
