In 1991, Osun's first governorship election pitted two young politicians with similar roots against each other, according to Archivi.

Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke (SDP), 36, faced Adebayo Alao Salami (NRC), 40, in the race to become the state's first elected governor. Both came from the People's Front (PF) before ending up in rival parties.

Salami entered the election with a united NRC behind him after winning the party primary. He was expected to benefit from both NRC supporters and his old PF network.

Adeleke's emergence as the SDP candidate was more controversial. His rival, Oladosu Oladipo, alleged irregularities in the primary and cited membership figures from Ede and Ifelodun LGAs to challenge the result. After a rerun, Adeleke secured the ticket with 95,519 votes against Oladipo's 53,761, despite threats of legal action.

Salami campaigned on his experience in government and accounting, while Adeleke pointed to his academic qualifications, business career and promise to attract investment to the new state.

Before the December poll, Adeleke predicted a 75–85% victory, while Salami argued experience, not party strength, would decide the election. Political observers still regarded the race as too close to call.

ADDENDUM:

The election was later won by Isiaka Adeleke making him the first civilian governor of Osun State and the second governor to emerge from the state after its creation. His brother, Ademola Adeleke, is the current governor of the state.
