“Over the Rainbow” is from Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s 1993 album Facing Future. Although it achieved little mainstream success upon its initial release, the medley later became a global phenomenon, transforming into one of the most beloved acoustic recordings of all time. Decades after Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole's death, it reached #1 in the UK and France, earned multi-Platinum certifications around the world and became one of the most streamed Hawaiian recordings in history.

The song was recorded in a single late-night take after Kamakawiwoʻole unexpectedly called a Honolulu recording studio asking if he could come in. Studio engineer Milan Bertosa opened the studio in the early hours of the morning, where Israel recorded the entire performance in one unforgettable session. A passionate advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty, IZ achieved worldwide superstardom posthumously. When he died in 1997, he became only the third person in history to lie in state at the Hawaii State Capitol, and thousands of mourners later gathered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean.
