A photo of Autumn Peltier from the Red Chair Sessions, a series that places importance on the reclamation of Indigenous spaces, places and languages, taken by award-winning photographer Nadya Kwandibens.
What started as a hobby has now taken Kwandibens across Turtle Island.
I tattooed #WomanLifeFreedom on my arm as a birthday gift to myself.
In my country Iran, if you are a woman;
Walking unveiled is a crime, showing your hair is a crime. Singing solo is a crime. Dancing is a crime. Traveling abroad without getting permission from your husband is a crime. Loving someone out of marriage is a crime. Attending mix party with men is a crime. Even entering stadium or riding a bicycle is a crime. And if you want to be a free woman, you have to break all these laws. Clearly in the eyes of clerical regime a free woman is a master criminal.
Women and men will get jailed, lashes or killed if they protest all these unjust laws. Even if you don’t protest you just say you don’t believe in Islam, still you get executed. You never live a life in Iran. But outside Iran if you say living under Islamic laws is scary you will get cancelled in the name of “Islamophobia”.
let me say it out loud: phobia is a nation, irrational fear, but my fear, and the fear of millions of women of Iran and Afghanistan living under Islamic republic, and Taliban is rational. That is why we want to end the gender, apartheid regimes, in order to have Freedom a normal life.
By the way, having tattoo is a crime in Iran.
Autumn Peltier is an Anishinaabe Indigenous rights advocate from the Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. She was named Chief Water Commissioner for the Aniishnabek Nation in 2019.
