On June 14, 1846, just 34 American settlers seized the Mexican outpost at Sonoma and proclaimed the independent California Republic. They raised the famous Bear Flag, elected William B. Ide as their leader, and hoped to establish a new republic in Alta California.
The new nation was remarkably short-lived. Lasting only 25 days, it existed during the opening weeks of the Mexican-American War before U.S. military forces arrived and replaced the Bear Flag with the Stars and Stripes on July 9, 1846.
Although the California Republic disappeared almost as quickly as it was created, its legacy endured. The original Bear Flag became the inspiration for California’s modern state flag, making one of America’s shortest-lived republics one of its most recognizable historical symbols.
The 25-day California Republic became a pivotal moment in the American conquest of California. It weakened Mexican control in the region, aligned local rebels with advancing U.S. forces, and accelerated the transfer of California during the Mexican-American War. While the republic itself vanished almost immediately, its symbolic impact lasted for generations through the Bear Flag, which evolved into the basis of California’s state flag. The episode also shaped the state’s identity, marking the transition from Mexican rule to eventual U.S. statehood and influencing the political and cultural development of the American West.

I’ve long admired how @OtherStatesPod handles Native American history. My library contains a number of books on the subject thanks to the source material Eric Yanis has shared over the years.
He has a great new episode out:
Mound Builders to Confederates: The Muscogee Creek, 1540–1718

“Albany Beef” wasn’t cattle—it was sturgeon.
Some fish fed entire families in 18th-century New York.
That scale of abundance shaped life before the Battles of Saratoga.

@PrincetonUPress is currently having a 50% off sale through 6/9.
I am currently scrolling through to see if there is anything I want.
One book I saw is The First King of England: Æthelstan and the Birth of a Kingdom by @DavidWoodman45 .
I read that last year and would recommend it.
I came to it by @tylercowen who called it “One of the best books on early English history, and also one of the best books on how the Dark Ages morphed into early Medieval times.”

In Saratoga County, Armed Forces Day carries layered meaning. From the fields of Stillwater to the streets of Schuylerville, the legacy of service stretches back to 1777 and the Battles of Saratoga.
This new essay highlights why Saratoga remains central… https://t.co/AlMZzTn2lS
Golden light over the Hudson River Valley.
Quiet fields in Stillwater.
A moment that changed the world.
The Battles of Saratoga proved America could win—and France believed it.
