Abdullāh b. Masʿūd رضي الله عنه:

“We are unable to stand in the night prayer.”

To which he replied: “Your sins have taken you far away.”

It was also said to Al-Ḥasan: “We are unable to stand at night to pray.”

He said: “Your sins have tied you down. Indeed the kings are only in the privacy (khalwa) of those who are sincere in their love and interaction. As for the one who opposes them then they are not pleased with them.”
