Texas Dentist Arrested After 4-Year-Old Girl Dies Following Procedure She Allegedly Didn't Need

A North Texas dentist has been arrested after authorities say a 4-year-old girl died following a dental procedure that investigators allege was unnecessary.

Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill, 48, was arrested Wed in connection with the April death of Aithana Rodríguez-Arriaga.
Police allege the child was given excessive amounts of meperidine (Demerol), along with additional sedatives and nitrous oxide, during a tongue-tie procedure.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled her cause of death as meperidine toxicity.
Investigators also allege the child's pediatrician and an ear, nose and throat specialist had previously determined she did not need the procedure.

Hemphill has been charged with injury to a child, a felony that carries a possible prison sentence if convicted.
