What do elite players do differently?
People often ask me what separates good players from elite players.
It isn't just talent.
Talent may get you noticed, but it won't sustain excellence. Over the years, as a player and a coach, I've found that elite players consistently develop these five habits:
🥎 They stay coachable. Elite players don't think they know it all. They welcome feedback, ask questions, and are always looking for ways to improve.
🥎 They master the fundamentals. They don't chase the flashy plays—they commit to doing the simple things exceptionally well. Under pressure, they trust the fundamentals they've practiced thousands of times.
🥎 They prepare long before game day. Confidence doesn't come from hoping you'll play well. It comes from the work you put in when no one is watching—practice, conditioning, film study, and preparation.
🥎 They control what they can control. They can't control the umpire, the weather, or a bad bounce. But they can control their attitude, effort, focus, and response. That's where champions live.
🥎 They make everyone around them better. True greatness isn't measured only by statistics. Elite players encourage teammates, lead by example, communicate well, and put the success of the team above themselves.
These habits don't just create better athletes—they build stronger leaders, better teammates, and people of character.
Over the next few weeks, we'll take a look at several more characteristics of elite players and what sets them apart.
Because becoming elite isn't about one big moment.
It's about making the right choices every single day.
