This is Dawson Clancy. He was only 3 years old.

Dawson loved firefighters and trucks. Patrick described him as energetic, funny, and a little boy who loved to push buttons. On the morning of January 24, 2023, Dawson did something big in his tiny world: he dressed himself completely by himself for the first time. Patrick was so proud that he took a picture and sent it to Lindsay.

That same night, Dawson was dead.

Lindsay Clancy took him into the basement and strangled him with an exercise resistance band. Patrick later found Dawson on the floor of his basement office and testified, “I knew he was gone.”

And when we talk about Lindsay’s relationship with Dawson, I think the things she herself wrote and said matter.

When Dawson was 19 months old, Lindsay wrote in a parenting group that he was “the most difficult human I have ever encountered” and said that nearly everything with him felt like a battle. Investigators testified, however, that despite examining the relationship closely, they found no evidence that she had previously abused Dawson.

Later, after Callan was born, Lindsay wrote that she “sort of resent[ed]” her older children because they prevented her from treating Callan like her first baby. She specifically wrote about feeling depressed when Cora and Dawson came home from school and said she wanted to feel love and connection with all of her children.

Those facts don’t tell us everything that was inside Lindsay Clancy’s mind. They shouldn’t be twisted into things the evidence doesn’t prove.

But Dawson deserves to have his story told too.

He wasn’t a diagnosis.
He wasn’t an argument about postpartum mental illness.
He wasn’t an inconvenience or a “difficult human.”

He was a three-year-old little boy who loved firefighters and trucks.

And in this picture, he got to be one. ❤️🚒

22-year-old Kailey Erhart told her partner to “Say goodbye to the kids” then slashed the throats of her 3 her three young children.

Miraculously, the 1-year-old Colton survived & is in the hospital now with his father.

Sadly 5-month-old Ava &
3-year-old Morgan died.

The couple had been in the process of separating & the father feared for the children & had reported to mental health services that Erhart had made threats to harm herself & the children yet they cleared her to be with the children.

Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to the November 2021 Oxford High School mass shooting. He killed four people.

He was just 15 years old at the time. He suffered from severe depression, anxiety, psychosis, and OCD. His parents neglected him and ignored his cries for help.

He is serving a life sentence.

In June 2023, Chad Doerman shot and killed his three sons. He initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He claimed that the thoughts of having to kill his sons were so overwhelming that he had not slept for four days. A doctor’s psychiatric report stated that Doerman was experiencing severe delusions and misperceptions while in a state of psychosis.

In August 2024, Doerman dropped the insanity defense and pleaded guilty.

He was sentenced to life in prison.

Mental illness can help explain how someone reached such a horrific place, But when someone takes innocent lives, there has to be a line that society draws.

Some acts are so heinous that the person responsible should never again be free to return to society.

And at the end of the day, we must never lose sight of the victims.

This sentiment reflects deep spiritual naïveté. I can name several places I’ve lived outside of Utah where standards for youth were higher, and I wish Utah would follow suit.

Don’t make Utah the boogeyman. The real problem here is that you’re in favor of lowering the bar for our youth. Simple matters like teaching them the importance of dressing appropriately to pass the sacrament is too much for you.

This mentality is coddling and infantilizing a generation, leaving them fragile and unprepared for missions, marriage, and life.
