“My personal goal is to break every single face-off or groundball record ever written.”
Alex Smith is one of the rare players who would make a statement like this and then could back it up.
He looks more like a restaurant owner than a faceoff guy… But he’s got a world class pedigree in both.
Alex opened his first eatery, a few blocks from the Inside Lacrosse offices. A Haagen Daaz corner shop, which is what Mike Keegan is shown here interviewing him about. At the end of the video they faced off on the countertop with a scoop of vanilla. I believe it’s still there today. Atlas Restaurant Group has 57 properties, and some IL talent on their staff.
At Delaware, he rewrote the record books: over 1,000 faceoff wins, 550+ groundballs, and three straight years leading the nation at the stripe. A three-time All-American, 2007 CAA Player of the Year, and leader of Delaware’s first-ever Final Four run, Smith helped redefine what a specialist could be. He carried that edge to the pros, winning an MLL title with Chesapeake and a World Championship with Team USA.
Note his chewed up gloves. If you’re a face off man this is what you’re going for.
