As a 10-year-old studying Uganda's political history, I often wondered how my late father - a remarkably tough man - survived as a young professional during the brutal regime of Idi Amin. In my youthful idealism, I questioned how sensible people navigated the rule of a man history recorded as an "idiot."

My late mother would routinely counter my arrogance with a simple fable about a baby elephant complaining to its mother about their heavy, ugly tusks. The mother’s only reply was always: "Grow up and see."

Time is the ultimate humbler.

As an intellectual and strategist navigating the shifting - and often unorthodox - realities of our current political epoch, I finally grasp her wisdom. The eternal dilemma of the thinking man in today's Uganda is balancing the heavy weight of foresight with the stark pragmatism required to survive and build. When power dynamics evolve in ways that defy conventional logic, textbook idealism must yield to strategic endurance.

Life, and the unfolding trajectory of our nation, have challenged me in equal measure. The tusks make sense now.
