Yesterday morning, we honoured an invite from the new High Commissioner of Canada to Kenya, @JoshuaTabah, for a round table conversation on the status of human rights in Kenya. The meeting was also attended by key partners in the human rights space.

We emphasized that the strengthening and independence of constitutional institutions such as the ODPP, NPS and IPOA is a matter of national priority in enhancing the human rights space in Kenya. We highlighted the increasing weaponization of these independent institutions and the criminal justice system as a tool of political repression against human rights defenders and citizens exercising their constitutional rights.

We urged the Canadian delegation @CanHCKenya to support civil society organizations to continue advocating and championing for human rights and safeguarding the constitution, and to take part in the call for stronger independent constitutional offices that can effectively carry out their mandate free from interference from the executive or parliament.
