Pretty much my whole life, I've been obsessed with learning every aspect of music production (creativity, composition, synthesis, MIDI, sampling, sound design, mixdown, mastering, etc)… 🎛️

I *know* the sheer frustration of not quite being able to get your music how you want it, not being taken seriously, and not hearing back from people you sent your music to. It's a struggle that's brought me to tears more than once (and I'm not normally a crier). It's no joke… 😭

But decades of relentless focus and sacrifice taught me 2 things… ✌

#2 – Lots of the most common advice is rubbish (more harm than good) 🗑️

^…The latter is the main reason my journey took so much time, effort and pain. I'm kinda mad about that… 😡

I now see most of my struggles were needless. Had I just had the right info/guidance/support in the first place, my decades of learning could've taken place over just a few years… 🥵

I'm double mad that other would-be music makers are going through the same needless struggle. Most of them won't make it. They'll die before they reach a high level… 💀

…But it's not their fault. The general culture and industry around music production tends to reinforce that struggle… 😑

We have countless groups, forums, communities, channels, servers, where frankly the blind lead the blind… 🧑‍🦯

And how about the "experts"? 🤨

Broadly, it seems to me that those with exceptional skills don't tend to have the will/ability to share, and those with the will/capacity to share don't tend to have exceptional skills… 🙄

Even most of the popular ones are apparently just pushing products, and don't seem to have much interest or experience making music at a *competitive*, world-class level… 🏆

Anyway, I wasn't born "talented", but I eventually reached a rare level of competence with making music, through brute force and an unhealthy passion… 😅

Of course, I'm not infallible. I haven't maxed-out every conceivable skill… but still, I've reached a level that makes life really interesting… 🤓

(I've helped countless artists kickstart their careers, collaborated with my heroes, worked closely with chart-topping artists in the UK, that kind of thing…)

But, most important to me, I've spent the majority of my waking hours working on music, loving every second of it. You can't put a price on happiness and fulfilment… 🥰

Do you even *want* to make your best music? 😜

If I were to broadly generalise what's wrong with all the usual routes to learning music production, there are two main factors where they fall short… 🙄

#1 Firstly, the lack of personalisation. You have your own tastes and preferences… your own style… your own voice… your own vision… your own skills, strengths, and weaknesses… 🧬

Most training services do little to address this. You have to work to their agenda, and on their timeline… 🥱

…AND their agendas don't even aim to get you exciting, juicy results. They might help you to get competent, but never to reach a competitive level… 🚀

Music is a highly competitive arena… mere competence has little value. You need to make remarkable music IF you want doors to open for you… 💪

🎧🎚️ Why "WHY" Is The Most Important Question… 🎹🎶

If we know WHY we can figure out HOW

You know that producer you look up to?

The one whose tunes leave everyone else in the dust?

Let's call them "DJ Bigshot"

People ask me all the time

Do you know HOW DJ Bigshot gets his bass so big? 🧐

Honestly, I don't

I've never seen his projects

I don't know which plugins he used

Or what order he used them in

But I *do* know WHY his bass works how it does

Mechanisms

First principles

Cause and effect

And if we understand WHY…

We can figure out HOW

Not necessarily how HE did it

How WE can do it

That's a different question… 🤓

Suppose you discover which synth he uses

You buy it

Now what?

You've got his synth, so what?

You don't have his understanding

You still need to know what to do with it

And WHY

The same goes for his presets

His processing chain

His favourite compressor

What is each piece actually doing?

Which parts matter?

Would it still work in YOUR track? 🤨

WHY?

Why NOT?

In any case, there are many ways to skin a cat

Copying DJ Bigshot's recipe is one thing

Learning what causes the result is better

Then you can develop your *own* formula

This offers reliability

Consistency

Efficiency

Understanding WHY is freeing

It means you can make decisions for a reason

You can adapt when the situation changes

Because your next track WILL be different

Different notes

Different sounds

Different rhythms

Different arrangement

A rigid recipe can't anticipate every scenario

Understanding gives you something to work with

Why does that sound powerful?

Why does this sound weak?

Why did that change make it clearer?
