The persistent disregard for traffic regulations by some motorists and motorcyclists in Abeokuta has become deeply alarming. Driving against traffic lights has become almost routine at major intersections such as Iyana-Mortuary, Pansheke, and several other locations across the city. What should be a basic rule of road safety is being treated as optional, exposing countless innocent road users to unnecessary danger every day.

In the last two days alone, I witnessed incidents at Pansheke that could easily have resulted in tragic accidents because some road users chose to ignore the traffic lights. Every red light exists to prevent collisions and save lives. When drivers and riders deliberately violate these rules, they gamble not only with their own lives but also with the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists who are obeying the law.

Equally disturbing is the apparent indifference of some law enforcement officers. Officials stationed at these intersections often do little to stop these dangerous violations. Even more troubling, I personally saw a police officer riding against the traffic light. When those entrusted with enforcing the law disregard it themselves, they weaken public confidence and encourage others to follow the same reckless path.

A safe and orderly society cannot be built where human life is treated with such levity. Traffic laws are not mere suggestions; they are safeguards designed to protect us all. I respectfully call on the Ogun State Government, traffic management authorities, the police, and every road user to take this issue seriously. Strict enforcement, consistent public education, and personal responsibility are essential if we are to make Abeokuta's roads safer for everyone.
