@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi I also didnt state there is nothing that can be objectively stated about art. Just that there is no objective good or objective bad. Of course I can make objective statements about art. "this was filmed with a camera" is an objective statement.
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi We value art in fundamentally different ways. Ergo I can explain my position to you but unless I change your fundamental values you will never actually be convinced. There isn't actually a contradictory statement that has been made here.
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi I've given you an example (In shutter island) of a direct continuity error but within the context of that film this could convey the warping of the protagonists reality. Just simply shouting: "continuity error!" isn't particularly interesting or meaningful.
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi That ones pretty easy tbh. It's meant to be a confusing fight where everything is getting upturned. Having the facts of the fight change within it could be seen as a way of conveying that.
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi I would like you to point out what statement I made is an objective statement. Because to clarify: I don't think there are very many, if any, movies that can't be discussed on a deeper level.
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi A good example of this might be shutter island. I remember a scene in that movie where there is a very clear continuity "error" between two shots. In one a character holds up a syringe in another it is down by his side. Is this an "error" or is this conveying something?
@NagashReturns@DisgruntJedi He doesn't. There is no objective good and objective bad within art. There is no "better". "Bad" in the context of art is something that has no thematic depth whatsoever. That is not the same thing. Every "mistake" within a work can be discussed for what it brings to that work.
@rougarou1776@DisgruntJedi You said that his approach was "He explains why his point is correct and provides examples."
The problem isn't based on whether or not he uses the word "correct" it's that that is his approach.
@rougarou1776@DisgruntJedi Okay. Have you ever actually engaged in any art discussion ever? Either in an academic context or outside of it? Because you don't seem to be able to understand that it might work differently from what mauler does.
@rougarou1776@DisgruntJedi That's what I'm describing...
"Correct" is not a term that should be anywhere near actual artistic analysis.
You don't seem to be able to even comprehend that.
@rougarou1776@DisgruntJedi Based on any discussion on art? Try to pass a university course by doing mauler level analysis and see how far it gets you...
