What's new: @Rob_erando and group used x-ray Raman scattering, to see what the nickel is doing all throughout the cathode particles. They found that nickel is reduced on the surface, relative to the bulk. The bulk, in fact, can be modelled!
Do charged cathodes look the same in the bulk and on the surface? Short 🧵on applying x-ray Raman scattering with a multiplet model of nickel speciation. Led by Lijin An with @Rob_erando@SaifulChemistry@apoletayev@R_A_House at @OxfordMaterials

Why this is hard: most characterization, including x-ray spectroscopies that distinguish states of the metals and the oxygens, probe only a short depth into the micron-sized cathode particles. So what is really happening?
