Stop recycling the same SOP for every graduate school application. As we reviewed applications for the MT Scholarship, we noticed a pattern: We gave instructions: some applicants ignored them. Some submitted essays five times longer than requested. Many answered a completely different question from the one that was asked. While others exaggerated their skills and experiences to appear more competitive. The take home is that many applicants write the essay they want to write instead of the essay they were asked to write. This same mistake happens in graduate school applications. Too often, applicants prepare one Statement of Purpose (SOP), change the school name, update a few faculty names, and submit it everywhere. But every program provides: prompts, priorities, and questions, that reveal what they actually want to learn about you. Before writing, ask: What is this prompt really asking? What qualities is this program trying to assess? Are they looking for a personal story, academic preparation, research interests, career goals, or all of the above? Does my essay answer the question directly? In fact, this is often what distinguishes a Personal Statement from a Statement of Purpose. Sometimes a school asks for one, but the prompt clearly points to the other. The prompt, not just the title, should guide your writing. Read the instructions. Read the prompt. Then read them again. Because a well-written essay that answers the wrong question is still the wrong essay.

As we reviewed applications for the MT Scholarship, we noticed a pattern:

In fact, this is often what distinguishes a Personal Statement from a Statement of Purpose. Sometimes a school asks for one, but the prompt clearly points to the other. The prompt, not just the title, should guide your writing.

Read the instructions. Read the prompt. Then read them again.

Because a well-written essay that answers the wrong question is still the wrong essay.

For seven years, the Michael Taiwo Scholarships has been helping brilliant graduates take the next step toward graduate school. What started in 2019 with just seven scholars has grown into a community of hundreds, with scholars going on to pursue graduate degrees at some of the world’s leading universities. A scholarship essay is not your CV wearing perfume. The committee already has the list of schools, roles and awards. The essay should help them understand a decision, a problem, a change in your thinking, or why this opportunity fits the work you want to do next. Answer the actual question. Use one or two concrete examples. Remove the paragraph that could belong to any applicant on earth. Big words do not create depth. Specific details do. And if the prompt says 500 words, 492 clear words are better than 700 words squeezed into a smaller font. Read the draft aloud before submitting. The sentence you cannot say naturally may be the sentence trying hardest to impress the committee.

It’s during these moments that our true character is forged and not in the easy times I want to take a moment to highlight someone who I’ve watched closely embodies resilience and determination and is someone you should learn from his story @Lucid_AMG He’s one of the most hardworking and relentless individuals I’ve had the privilege to know. This guy has faced his share of challenges, but what makes him stand out is his refusal to back down, like Bruhh literally never quits. Instead of letting setbacks define him, he used them as fuel to rise stronger, smarter, and more determined. That’s how you know an intelligent person👍🏽 Back then when we both lost a chunk of our funding about $200k on my end, we would call ourselves often, not wailing, but looking for a way out. At one point we even planned going for confession to prolly free ourselves from the shackles of sin😂😂 His journey assures me everyday that tough times don’t last, but tough people do‼️ No matter what you’re going through, know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Use every setback as an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately come back even stronger.
