March 27, 1915 - F-4 was conducting submarine maneuvers off Honolulu when she took on water and sank at 306 feet, just 1.5 miles from the harbor. Despite efforts to locate the boat and save her crew, all 21 perished making F-4 the 1st US Navy commissioned submarine lost at sea.

#OTD in 1944 after tracking a different five-ship convoy for six hours, Bowfin made a night surface attack and sank two cargo vessels and damaged another before expending all of her torpedoes.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day we remember the Irish-born John Phillip Holland who invented the first submarine commissioned by the US Navy, and the first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1.

#OTD in 1947 Ensign John W. Lee, Jr. became the first African-American with a commission in the regular Navy and served on board USS Kearsarge (CV 33) one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers completed during or shortly after WWII for the United States Navy. ⚓
