Argyle Life rarely take collective editorial stances. This is because we usually disagree on all things Argyle. Even before yesterday, our regular contributors had not reached a consensus on Wayne Rooney’s position as head coach.
That consensus, however, has now been reached. It is clear to all of us—Rooney optimists and sceptics alike—that the results and performances at this stage are simply not good enough, and things are only trending in one direction. It is imperative that he is relieved of his duties immediately.
We make this statement because we love the club and don’t think the current pattern of dismal failure is necessary or inevitable. Fans will rightly debate whether the buck should stop with Rooney; we will have that debate ourselves. But change has to start with the head coach position. We thank Rooney for the enthusiasm he has brought to the job, and for some great memories. But this cannot continue.
