Today July 8, 2026 at the Honolulu Hale, we joined communities across the nation in recognizing America 250 with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. At 12:00 PM, VA Pacific Islands Health Care System Interim Executive Director Thomas Steinbrunner attended The Nation’s Declaration Heard Aloud, hosted by Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s office.
This tradition honors July 8, 1776, when Colonel John Nixon first read the Declaration publicly in Philadelphia’s Independence Square—words that helped shape the course of history. Today, cities across the country echoed that moment with their own readings at noon.
A meaningful celebration of our nation’s founding and a reminder of the enduring spirit of independence.
In observance of Independence Day, all VA Pacific Islands Health Care System outpatient clinics will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, and Saturday, July 4, 2026.
Our clinics will resume normal operations on Monday, July 6, 2026.

VA Pacific Islands closed out Nurses Week with a little Disney magic while celebrating the compassion, courage, and dedication of our nursing teams across the Pacific.
Nurse Executive Kathrine Pope reminded us that nurses are “bringing light, comfort, and hope to every story you touch,” recognizing the extraordinary care they provide to Veterans every day.
Interim Executive Director Thomas A. Steinbrunner also highlighted the impact of nursing care across our system, noting that “what feels routine to you… might be unforgettable to someone else.”
The ceremony also included the presentation of several awards recognizing outstanding nursing contributions and achievements across the organization, and all nurses in attendance joined together in reciting the Florence Nightingale Pledge.
Mahalo to all of our nurses for being the heroes of our story and for the difference you make in the lives of our Veterans every day. #NursesWeek #VAPIHCS #VANurses
