Mr Ngeh( Beruas) suggested that the Syariah Committee must also include non-Muslim constitutional experts. His concern is understandable, but he framed the issue wrongly.

The Syariah Committee must include representatives from those who want to see some measure of civil liberties protected in the country. That is to say, those who want constitutional freedom ( little of what is left) remain intact and not bulldozed by what I call the Abolitionists.

Abolitionists are those who use religion to deny others their fundamental rights and are unwilling to follow the dictates of the majority. What Mt Ngeh is saying is that the country must not allow the tyranny of the majority to rule. He mistakenly framed the issue as between Muslims and non-Muslims.

The contestation in our country since the reign of Islamisation policies in the 1980s has always been between civil libertarians and Absolutists, not between Muslims and non-Muslims. The attack on secular democracy has been consistent, and that’s why voices like Mr Ngeh are welcomed.

But Ngeh should frame the issue as between democracy and tyranny. Otherwise, he will always be attacked by the Absolutionudts as “anti-Islam.”

The abolitionists have the upper hand now. In the 1990’s we had groups like the Bar Council, Sabah/ Sarawak,w Suhakam, Suaram DAP and some remnants of Umno leaders who would fiercely defend democratic rights. Not anymore. Now, those voices are no longer heard. They are mesmerised by the Madani juggernaut

So, Mr Ngeh, please continue to speak up. Of course, the likes of Mr Loke will want us to focus on the economy, but the country does not need to be Iran or Afghanistan just because we wish to develop.
The trajectory of our politics is unmistakably towards more Islam. Just be careful of what kind of Islamic government we have in store for our future generations
