PCS vows to defend members from threats

Responding to today’s spending review announcement from the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union general secretary Fran Heathcote said:

“We welcome the announcements from the Chancellor increasing capital spending, recognising the need to invest in transport, energy and housing. There is much to rebuild from the wreckage of the Tory years.

"However, there are worrying real terms cuts in some departmental budgets which will give our members cause for concern. When people voted for change, they did not expect Labour to continue with real terms cuts to many government departments.

"Cuts have consequences. They will hamper our members’ ability to keep the country running, deliver vital services and meet the policy objectives the government has set for itself.

"We are also disappointed that, at a time when the government is finding billions for defence spending and weapons, they appear to be determined to continue with their plan to slash disability benefits. There is no security in rising levels of poverty, homelessness and threadbare public services.

“We will be fighting hard to ensure that we defend our members from any threats that may arise to their job security and to persuade the government to deliver properly funded, good quality public services."
