Slavery has historically been an impediment to industry. When you pay no wages it is not worth introducing labour saving machines.
Thousands of years of slavery never produced industrial society. Water power and steam power drove industrialization.
Such ignorance, @MichaelRosenYes
Caribbean sugar did not generate vast wealth for Britain nor did it drive industrialisation
As I had to explain to KehindeAndrews, sugar amounted to 2.5% of net British national income
Coal, sheep farming, the woolen industry, and iron were far more valuable
In 1770, the peak year for sugar, sugar only accounted for 3% of capital formation. If sugar was such a hot commodity it would have accounted for a FAR higher %.
In fact, Scottish & Irish flax and linen were much more of a revenue generator for the British economy than sugar
The reality is that the contribution of sugar to the British economy was the same as for barley and hops - and I don't recall anyone saying that beer was fundamental for the Industrial Revolution.
My debate on @triggerpod
@RafHM@MichaelRosenYes Also sugar was a luxury and you can not industrialised by expanding production of luxuries. You need expanded production of machinery and energy.
@GrunwaldSpier Fair point. The NSDAP has specific German traits, socialist demogogy combined with a plan to conquer Poland and Russia. Likud has no claim to socialism and is after different lands to conquer.
@__jacker__ Far from being a “human shield” my son was acutely aware of dangers posed by Israel’s loose rules of engagement. Wearing a fluorescent jacket, saw children being targeted by an IDF sniper, handed over his camera and rescued two children. He was shot in the head for his humanity.
I see that the Israel lobby lost badly in the American election. Whether this is enough to stop the resumption of aggression against Iran seems doubtful whatever the Vice President says.
@K_Niemietz If is unclear how you build up industry by importing a. Luxury good like sugar. It would be more plausible to say coal mines and ironworks industrialised the UK.
@Stevnage75328@KatieSaysWhat@enkypanky@BraddockBessie Thomas Jefferson instructed George Rogers Clark to retaliate against tribes that had "massacred frontier inhabitants without provocation," and explicitly promised to confiscate the land of these tribes and distribute it to volunteers as reward. Same story.
@Marikacobbold@BraddockBessie The Israeli state claims all of Palestine as it's territory. That is the country they stole. It has been step by step expropriation on their part. Now they are starting to steal South Lebanon.
