Remember when we first added tagged PDFs over 18 years ago? That was just the beginning! Since then, we’ve continuously improved automatic tagging and support for PDF/A-1a and PDF/A-3a.

9 years ago, we added support for PDF/UA-1, which included further improvements to automatic tagging to meet the Matterhorn Protocol. We also introduced validation for PDF/A and PDF/UA, which is done by a third-party library, not the code that creates the documents.

Last year, we made automatic tagging even more powerful by taking ARIA attributes from the source HTML into account.

Today, the PDF accessibility features of PDFreactor are so advanced that for many documents, you can just enable PDF/UA-1 mode and let PDFreactor handle conformance and tagging (but you still have the option to tweak things manually if needed).

You can also combine PDF/UA and PDF/A for documents that meet both accessibility and archiving requirements. Automatic tagging will adapt to both formats, prioritizing the stricter rules.
