For years they tell you to eat more fibre. Keeps the bowel healthy, wards off diverticulitis, all those little pouches in the gut wall waiting to flare. Load the plate with wholegrains and roughage and you'll be fine.

Then the diverticulitis arrives anyway, and you're admitted in real pain.

The first thing they do is take the fibre away.

Straight onto a low residue diet, the polite term for the gentlest, most easily digested food they can find, so the raw gut has next to nothing to process while it heals. In a bad flare, clear fluids only.

Here is the bit they skate past. The lowest residue food on earth is meat. Beef is broken down and absorbed so completely, so high up in the gut, that it leaves almost nothing behind to grind past the sore spots. No roughage. No fermenting bulk. The calmest thing you could give an angry gut is a bit of tender meat.

And that is the exact food they warn you off for the rest of your life.

Instead they reach for white toast and broth. Fibre milled out of it. Which is a quiet admission that when it really matters, when every gram counts, fibre is the thing you remove.

Eat fibre to prevent the problem. Get the problem, and the first move is to strip the fibre out.

But do have your five a day.
