Clarifying recent headlines on bonfires in our Lisburn & Castlereagh council area—there's been some confusion, possibly from the decision to put the meeting into confidential session, excluding the public and press. This happens too often in council and needs to change for better transparency.
To the point: A new scheme will support groups who 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 to transition from traditional bonfires to beacons. This is voluntary, not enforced, and council-backed only if organisers opt in.
In Lisburn North, we have well-organised traditional bonfires with no issues—great examples for all. I'll back their continuation if the community and organisers want it.

Officially opened our newest #socialenterprise today. The ‘Tearooms at Hilden Mill’. Next up very soon will be ‘Little Weavers Day Care’ under the same roof at Hilden Primary School @ResurgamTrust@lisburnccc@LisburnStar

It was a true delight to attend the official opening of Little Weavers Daycare and The Tea Room At Hilden Mill, both housed in the beautifully restored Hilden Mill School.
The transformation here is truly exceptional, with a real “wow” factor from the moment you step inside. I want to commend everyone involved in making this vision a reality, from start to finish. This new facility is a fantastic asset for our entire community, and I’m confident it will receive the support it deserves. I was particularly inspired by Adrian Bird from The Resurgam Trust, who used today’s celebration to also call for action at the Hilden Mill site across the road, including the potential for public ownership to safeguard its heritage, something I am in full agreement with him on and that is part of my recently passed motion in council on the subject.
Come along to one of the two public open days this Friday and Saturday from 11am to 2pm, and don’t miss the Tea Room’s grand opening to the public this Monday. Come explore this incredible new space and support our community’s future!
Pictured with Margaret Hanthorne & Ann Ferguson, whose book about the school requires relaunching, with another chapter adding. Watch this space 😊
