At the groundbreaking of the Orio Mini Hydro Power Project, Deputy Ambassador/Head of Development Cooperation - Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda,Joost Van Ettro reaffirmed the Netherlands' commitment to Uganda’s renewable energy sector.

He noted that the Netherlands has invested UGX 650B in Uganda’s energy sector, supporting large hydro plants, mini-grids, & off-grid solar solutions.

He highlighted that this project, funded through Invest International, will add 6.7MW to Uganda’s grid, extend 288km of power lines, and connect 140,000 people & 2,000 SMEs.

The Ambassador commended Uganda’s leadership in prioritising renewable energy investments, creating an enabling environment for both public & private sector participation.

He emphasised that the Netherlands remains a strategic partner in Uganda’s energy transition, with more projects on the horizon.

Today, I had the pleasure of officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Orio Mini Hydro Power project in Mitooma District.

This project, generously funded by the Government of the Netherlands in partnership with the Government of Uganda, is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving development.

I thank the Government of the kingdom of the Netherlands for believing in Uganda’s vision for development and for supporting this project. I also thank the Minister of Energy, @NankabirwaRS ; State Ministers Hon. Okasai Opolot and @PNyamutoro , members of parliament led by Chair natural resources committee @Herbert_Ariko ; as well as Permanent Secretary Irene Batebe for attending the groundbreaking ceremony and steering the ministry in the right direction.

Upon completion, the Orio project will have nine mini hydropower plants generating 6.7 MW. The project also includes the construction of a local distribution network stretching 288 kilometers and connecting more than 71,000 households across numerous districts in western Uganda.

For many of us residing in rural areas, electricity has been like a visitor—coming for a few minutes and then going away. Reliable electricity from this project will power economic development in these districts.

The Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company @UECCC1 has secured a €13.1 million grant from the Netherlands’ ORIO Infrastructure Fund to develop nine mini hydro power sites (6.7 MW), a 288 km distribution network, and over 71,000 last-mile connections.

Upon completion, the project will provide reliable electricity to over 376,000 people and 1,300 SMEs, reduce carbon emissions by limiting diesel generator use, and improve health by reducing kerosene lamp dependency.
